18 Years Later Nigeria Is ‘Still Jaga Jaga’ – Eedris Abdulkareem

Veteran Nigerian rapper, Eedris Abdulkareem says 18 years after he released his highly controversial single, ‘Nigeria Jaga Jaga,’ the country is ‘still jaga jaga.’

‘Jaga jaga,’ is a Nigerian slang used to explain a state of disorganization or untidiness, chaos or mess.

The musician made this public during his appearance on Channels TV’s Rubbing Minds on Sunday with host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu .

His controversial track drew the attention of Nigeria’s former President, Olusegun Obasanjo who openly criticized the rapper on national TV. The track brewed widespread attention and became a household anthem in 2002.

During the interview with Ebuka, Eedris stated that he was happy that his song was able to reach the President even though it was heavily condemned.

“In 2002 I dropped Nigeria Jaga Jaga, and the ex-president came on the National TV and said that boy wey sing that song, na him papa and him family jaga jaga,” Eedris said.

“I was very happy that my message got to the president. I was very happy that the president talked back at me because that means they were listening and today I’ve been vindicated again because Nigeria is still jaga jaga,” he added.

Asked if his feud with the ex-president affected his career, Eedris said: “life is about choice and whatever you stand for, there are people who wanna live that life with you, who wanna go that path with you and you become classic for the rest of your life.”

Another pressing issue discussed on the show was ‘sex for grades’, which has plagued the Nigerian education system for years.

He used the opportunity to explain how his socially conscious song, ‘Mr. Lecturer’ was birthed.
